What’s Up With Randy and Paula White?

September 24, 2007

Recently the news broke that televangelist Paula White was divorcing her husband Randy who is the Pastor of Church Without Walls in Tampa, Fla. Apparently their individual ministries took them in different directions in life. As I understand it they have been living apart for some time. He says he will continue his ministry as Pastor with no changes and she will continue hers the same.

Wow! Is it just me or does these seem insane to anyone else? I believe I am merciful and compassionate. I know that life is complicated. I am certainly not one of those folks who believe that because someone is divorced or remarried that they are second class citizens in the Kingdom of God.

But Paula and Randy are ministers. They are “big time” preachers who are frequently on TV or in print with countless people who look to them for truth. They represent Christianity to the world. What does this say? Does God give His people who are married a “pass” if their lives begin to go in two different directions (ministries)? Is God’s grace sufficient to keep two seemingly born again Christians (ministers) together? Does the Word of God matter? How could either one of them have a message for married people that need help now?

I have to wonder why they didn’t pull away from their all important mega-ministries and seek help and restoration. To me a Christian couple that divorces has either failed to obey or trust God. We Christians are supposed to believe that marriage is sacred. We are supposed to be countering the spirit of the world on such matters. They should have seen how damaging this would be to the cause of Christ and to those that have trusted them for God’s message. They should have trusted God to maintain the bonds of marriage they had vowed themselves to honor.

This ain’t right. I don’t know what we should do except to mourn over such “Hollywood” Christianity and pray that God will lead us all to want to please Him in such important matters as marriage. I for one will continue to look to God and my local church instead of Christian TV for the truth of God.
